Linux to power US Navy aircraft – ZDNet UK News

July 31, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Linux to power US Navy aircraft – ZDNet UK News: “Linux has made inroads into embedded computing systems such as networking equipment and mobile phones, but Wind River is trying to expand its presence in other embedded computing markets such as aerospace and military applications. The strategy is a turnaround for the Alameda, California-based company, which until 2003 disparaged Linux in favor of its own proprietary operating system, VxWorks.

The company is bridging the divide between the operating systems with its Workbench programming tool software. The company charges a company $4,000 to $11,000 (£2,150 to £5,900) for each developer’s copy of the software. However, where Wind River charges a royalty fee for devices using VxWorks, it doesn’t with Linux, said Glenn Seiler, senior manager for Linux Platforms at Wind River.

A four-year follow-up study published in the July issue of Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques, a prestigious scientific journal, supports previous results that show patients suffering from lumbar spinal stenosis have significantly greater improvement with a new, minimally invasive procedure, the X STOP(R) Interspinous Process Decompression (IPD(R)) System (“X STOP”) and remained stable over time. These results come on the heels of a recently published study in the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine that demonstrated the X STOP to have significantly greater clinical success (63.4%) than non-operative care which was found to have a clinical success rate of only 12.9 percent.
