macosXrumors.com: news and rumors related to Mac OS X and Apple: “A Pentium on a PCI-X card?

A MacBidouille’s reader notes that the following was posted on Apple’s Darwin x86 forums:

“Customers with existing PPC G5’s will have the option of a PCI-X based add-on card with a native Intel follow-on to the P4 “D” chip and of-course the Transitive/”Rosetta” bundle. Any other PPC machine bellow the G5 (i.e. G4, G3 machines) are not included on the current roadmap inclusion. Third-party providers have shown interest is providing a solution for down-level Macs.”

We still don’t know if Apple itself will provide such a card and if this card will allow both of the processors to work at the same time. “

Mac OS Rumors :: The Original Mac Rumor Site. – Mac Leopard

June 7, 2005 · Leave a Comment

Mac OS Rumors :: The Original Mac Rumor Site.: “Next version of Mac OS X will be ‘Leopard,’ and will focus largely on the transition to Intel/x86. As Apple seeks to commoditize many aspects of its hardware, Leopard will focus on unique features including an extremely graphically-rich user interface revamp leveraging the meta-data technology (aka Spotlight) introduced in Tiger.

Apple has adapted Transitive’s QuickTransit code morphing engine, as rumored, and will deliver it to developers as ‘Rosetta’ which allows PowerPC binaries to run on Intel with reasonable performance. A developer kit with a 3.6GHz P4 Intel-based ‘Mac,’ OS X 10.4.1 for Intel, and Rosetta will begin shipping in two weeks.”

MacInTouch Home Page – MacTel term

June 7, 2005 · Leave a Comment

MacInTouch Home Page: “We don’t see any new arguments for switching to Windows; it’s still grossly insecure and vulnerable to malware, uglier and less consistent than Mac OS X (notwithstanding Mac OS X’s deplorable Finder and deteriorating user interface). However… Mac users will have to choose between investing in the new MacTel systems or switching to Windows, as the costs will likely be similar. We have no idea yet how, or if, Windows applications will run on MacTel systems. “

This is the first instance of the term MacTel, posted by Ric Ford over at Macintouch.

Nice one Ric.

Apple to Switch Macs to Intel Chips

Apple to Switch Macs to Intel Chips: “Apple Announces Plans to Switch Macintosh Computers to Intel Chips Used in Windows-Run Systems

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In a risky move that could further shrink its minuscule slice of the PC market, Apple Computer Inc. announced plans Monday to switch its Macintosh computers to the same Intel Corp. chips used in systems that run Microsoft Windows.”

Risky, now there is a word I’ve not heard around Apple for a while. What happened to beleaguered?

This PR is FUD.
